HEIR Mail - December 2002The Georgia Legislature has set the week of February 3-7 as Home Education week. Home education organizations set up tables, and displays inside the Capitol. This is a day when home educators across the state get to chat with elected state officials and make a case for alternative education for our children.
Many of you have probably read about California, where one person has decided that home education is not a recognized, or legal alternative to government-sponsored education. This is a reality and can happen in Georgia if we don’t keep our state officials informed and “educated”.
One of the ways that this right can be preserved for our children in the future is to show up on Capitol Day, February 6th, and show these officials our numbers and our resolve. Let’s show them that home education is not just a fad or phase, but that it represents a growing segment of our state, an educated segment.
Please mark your calendars NOW to attend Capitol Day, February 6th and help represent home education. Just one or two hours of your time and attendance at the event will demonstrate to our elected officials the importance of allowing families to make the decisions regarding the education of their children, which by the way, is our God given right. It is also a great opportunity to allow your children to see the legislative branch of our state government in action.
Those interested in renting a table for their group (8:30am-2:30pm- $30.00 per table) playing music or singing ( 12noon-1pm) or reserving a spot for one of the tours of the Capitol ( 9:30am or 10:30am- 100 people max. per tour) may call me at 770-471-8566, after 2pm please, or email me at joni.thea@juno.com.
The Capitol is located in downtown Atlanta at the intersection of I-20 and I-75/85, near Underground Atlanta, The World of Coca-Cola and the Five Points and Georgia State MARTA stations.
It is very important that a good impression is demonstrated to those in the Capitol. Therefore, we request that attendees dress appropriately. Remember, those persons working in the Capitol wear business attire. For more information regarding government in Georgia visit http://www.georgia.gov/. May God Bless each of you!
