Melanie Pearson Awarded Presidential Scholarship at Shorter College

[News page]

Congratulations to Melanie Pearson who has received the Presidential Scholarship at Shorter College and plans to attend there in the fall. She will be majoring in Biology and future plans are to go to Medical School and into Medical Research. Melanie will be graduating this year from Christian Liberty Academy Satellite Schools.

She has been homeschooled since the 7th grade. Melanie started reading at home at the age of 3 and went to pre-school (private) for a year. Her Kindergarten teacher saw her potential and discovered she was on a 2nd grade level in Math and 4th grade level in reading. Melanie was immediately promoted to 1st grade. From 1st - 6th grades she was unable to strive to her potential because the teachers didn't want "smart" students in their classes. She was made to work at their pace-not hers and many made her feel unwelcome. They suggested that she work ahead in the books at home since the rest of the students were behind. As soon as mom found out that it was legal to homeschool, she brought Melanie's brother home to give homeschooling a "try" then Melanie the following year. Seven years and 2 moves later (residents of GA for almost 5 years now), Melanie graduates this June and her brother graduates 8th grade.
