Dorminy Tops GA SATs in 04 Talent Search

[News page]

McDonough, GA's Billy Dorminy was among the nervous 7th graders taking the SAT last January as part of Duke University's Talent Identification Program. The program is used to identify young people who have exceptional abilities as shown on the SAT or ACT taken during their 7th grade year and is available to those who score above 95%ile in their 6th grade achievement tests. He anxiously awaited the grading of his test, just like all other SAT takers. When he did receive his scores, his parents were shocked - 720 verbal, and 730 math.

Billy was invited to the Grand Ceremony at Duke University to pick up his medallion for exceptionall scores. His mother, Ann, had received her awards from TIP 24 years earlier, in the first year of the program. They were unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict.

Billy was able to make it the regional awards ceremony at West GA University. Once again, his parents were shocked. They were unaware of hte honor that awaited him. WGU awarded him a scholarship to their summer program for young people, an honor they bestow only the two highest scoring students from the state of GA - one for the SAT, and one for the ACT.

Needless to say, Billy's parents are pleased with his sucess. John met Ann at Duke while he was taking summer classes through a program associated with TIP. They both graduated from Duke, and were married in the Gothic cathedral that forms the focal point of the University.
