[News page]

February 1-7 is Home Education Week each year in GA and, this year, Home Education Day at the Capitol is Thursday, February 03, between the hours of 8:30AM and 2:30PM. GHEA is organizing the event and we appreciate their efforts.

Coalition for Equity in the University System of GA.During Home Education Day at the Capitol, Senator Tom Price (R-6th District) talks with Dr. Leon McGinnis, chairman of Home Education Information Resource in 1997-1999, about the Coalition for Equitable USG Admissions.

This is a good day to come visit your legislators and observe the displays and presentations that will be offered by many home education organizations. Please take the opportunity to bring your unique perspective to the consideration of educational issues such as the USG's admissions requirements for students of unaccredited programs and the Governor's educational reform efforts. Directions to the capitol are at the end of this message.

HEIR (http:www.heir.org/) will have a table at the Capitol. Among other things, the displays will focus on the USG's admissions requirements for students of unaccredited programs and the proposed resolution urging the Chancellor and the Board of Regents to establish an open and inclusive admissions policy-making process.

We need your assistance. As a volunteer organization, we depend upon donations to fund the web site and the expenses associated with correspondence and providing materials for elected officials.

With the General Assembly in session, and with Capital Day rapidly approaching (February 3), HEIR is faced with mounting expenses and a rapidly declining treasury.

In the near future, HEIR will initiate membership dues, as a way to fund ongoing operations. However, we urgently need donations to carry us through the current session of the General Assembly. If you can make a donation, no matter how small, please mail it to:

HEIR
PO Box 2111
Roswell, GA 30077-2111

Anyone making a donation of at least $12 will be considered a dues paying member of HEIR for the calendar year 2000.

We also need volunteers to man the table and to assist people in finding their way on the Capitol campus. If you can help us at Capitol Day please contact Mike Olson via e-mail at mbnoslo@mindspring.com.

OTHER INFORMATION

(some contributed by GHEA and some by HEIR):

Make appointments now with your personal legislators for the week of Feb. 1 - 7 and bring baked goodies to them and their staff. Notify Ann Cline of GHEA about your appointment. In this way GHEA will know which Legislators are missed. If you don't know who your legislators are, then call your local Voter Registration office or visit the website http://www.ga.lwv.org/district.htm . GHEA needs volunteers to drop off goodies to those legislators who don't get a visit.

Send out Press Releases to local newspapers about Home Education Week in Ga. Home Education Week was signed into law last year by Governor Miller. To create a press release just send a picture with students on a field trip or the like with a short blurb to your local newspaper. That's it and it doesn't cost anything!

Invite local legislator to a coffee, tea, or group meeting. Have them speak or use the time to get to know them.
