Heir - Coalition Responds to Chancellor Portch

[News page]

In the October, 1997 meeting with the Chancellor, HEIR representatives were told to make a proposal for how homeschoolers might be admitted to the University System of Georgia. Acting on that charge, HEIR invited a number of homeschool associations and the Georgia Association of Christian Schools to form a coalition that could speak for the broad community of affected Georgia citizens. The coalition begain its work in March, 1998, and met regularly over the summer. On September 30, 1998 they presented their proposal to Chancellor Portch.

The coaltion has a web site, http://www.heir.org/coaleqad/, where you may read their proposal, and also may download a copy . You also may see who worked on the coalition. The coalition encourages homeschoolers and others affected by the admission policy to contact the Chancellor's office and make known your feelings on this matter.

A short article appeared in the Harvest Home Educators newsletter, giving some background and summarizing the coalition's proposal.

As of November 5, 1998, the coalition was planning meetings with newly elected officials, to try to bring political pressure on the Chancellor so that he will give the proposal a favorable response. Individual homeschoolers can help in that effort by contacting their senator and representative and asking them to support the coalition's proposal. Meanwhile the coalition has received from the Chancellor a response to the proposal.
