Southeast Homeschool Expo
Friday & Saturday, July 30-31, 2010

HEIR is providing a workshop:
"Homeschooling Civics 101"
This workshop will be presented at 11:15 on Saturday in room 117.

Learn the requirements of Georgia law for home study programs &, just as importantly, appreciate the freedoms that the law respects. How have we gotten to where we are? Who & what forces threaten the free practice of home education? (You might be surprised.) How do we defend our freedom? What is more important: Access to the taxpayer-funded resources, albeit fair, or practicing home education without third party oversight (3PO)?

From the Southeast Homeschool Expo website:

"New homeschoolers, classical homeschoolers, eclectic homeschoolers, unschoolers – everyone will find something for them at the 2010 Southeast Homeschool Expo! You might have babies or high schoolers, maybe everything else in between! No matter where you are on your homeschooling journey, you will find whatever you need to inspire, enlighten, and encourage you through your next year of homeschooling.

"Come and join us! Listen to inspiring speakers, make some new homeschool friends – maybe just spend time reconnecting with other old homeschooling friends. Give your homeschooling a new or fresh start with creative ideas, homeschool products, and services you and your children will enjoy!"

ACCREDITATION AS REGULATION - OUR FUTURE?
Not if you defend the non-accredited Route to Learning ... and College

Are you a traditional home educator whose children learn at home? Are you an unschooler? Do you use an eclectic approach to curriculum? Are you not accredited?

Currently, the Board of Regents permits public colleges in GA to evaluate your students for regular freshman enrollment (but not joint enrollment) by evidence other than accredited high school transcript. We must preserve an alternative, appropriate admissions path and work for its equity.

If not, then what other dominos fall?

Problems With Local School Officials & Declaration of Intent Forms
Take Care Not to Overcomply!

A Short History of Home Education in Georgia
Being Aware of Our History May be the Key to Preserving Our Freedom.

Did You Know...
That school districts all over Georgia are breaking the law by their use of Declaration of Intent forms that do not comply with our current Georgia code? Download HEIR’s forms to use instead. Our Declaration of Intent requests only the information required by our home study law, O.C.G.A. 20-2-690. Our monthly attendance forms are easier to use than others because they’re forms you can save and complete on your computer and print out month by month.

That compulsory attendance age has been effectively raised to 18 in Georgia (if your students want to drive) by legislation most home educators never even noticed? Did you know it was "homeschool-friendly" legislators trying to improve Georgia school attendance who authored the bill?

That the current modus operandi for encroaching on homeschool freedom is through Department of Education, Department of Motor Vehicles, and local school district policy rather than legislation?

That HEIR is the statewide homeschool organization in Georgia that operates fully as an all-volunteer organization composed of caring homeschool parents who donate their time and resources to HEIR? Read more about HEIR, its Mission and Vision and the work it does for Georgia home educators.

That HEIR is the statewide homeschool organization in Georgia whose volunteers monitor the Georgia General Assembly from start to finish every year, that networks with legislators and policymakers throughout the state to protect homeschool freedom in Georgia?

That founding members of HEIR were among the first to alert citizens about HB 586, a bill that would have made it nearly impossible for most of you to homeschool in Georgia?

That you can support the work of HEIR and join us in protecting homeschool freedom with or without paying dues. All our work, all our information, and all our materials you can use are absolutely free.

Please consider joining us in protecting homeschool freedom in this state. If you have questions about HEIR or need further information, please contact us.
